How to use an engagement ladder in an advocacy network
An engagement ladder turns "we want more active members" into steps people can see. Each step describes a level of involvement, from knowing about the campaign to leading it, so you can plan how to move members up instead of only counting them.
Keep the steps few and concrete. Describe behaviour you can observe at each step: attends meetings, shares the network's messages, meets a decision-maker, leads a working group. Add the topics your strategy depends on, such as skills or presence in the media.
Then place every member on the ladder, agree with each one the step they aim for this year, and give them what that step needs: training, materials, a role. Review the ladder before each campaign: members moving up is one of the clearest signs that a network is getting stronger.
See every member move up the ladder
In Advancer.World your ladder becomes the network's shared path. Members see their step and what the next one asks, the secretariat sees the whole network, and progress is recorded as it happens.
- Each member places itself and sees its next step
- Campaign tasks, trainings and documents attached to each step
- Awards and certificates when members reach a new step

What is an engagement ladder?
A set of steps describing how deeply someone takes part in a cause or a network, from first awareness to leadership. Campaigners use it to plan how to move supporters and members to the next step.
How is it different from a maturity model?
It is the same idea applied to engagement: stages across, topics down. A maturity model usually describes an organization's capacity; an engagement ladder describes how involved a member is in the network.
Can I change the steps?
Yes. Every step, topic and description can be edited, added or removed. You can also start from one of the other templates or from a blank grid.
Is my ladder saved?
It is kept in this browser only, so you can come back to it on this device. Nothing is sent to our servers. Download it as Excel to share it with your team.
