How to choose indicators for a partner program
Choose few indicators, and use them. For each result you want to show, one or two indicators are usually enough: one showing that the work is done (an output) and one showing that it makes a difference (an outcome).
Check that you can collect each indicator with the data you have, as often as you need, without adding a burden your partners cannot carry. The data source on each card tells you where the number comes from; the frequency tells you how often it makes sense to measure it.
Set a baseline before you start and a target you can defend, then review the numbers with partners, not only for the donor report. The downloaded sheet has empty columns for baselines, targets and notes, ready for your MEAL plan.
Collect your indicators from every partner, in one place
In Advancer.World indicators are attached to the stages of your program. Each partner records its own values, the history is kept, and you see the whole network's figures without merging a single spreadsheet.
- KPIs per stage and per partner
- Values recorded by partners, with their history

What is the difference between an output and an outcome indicator?
An output indicator measures what the program delivers, such as trainings held or plans agreed. An outcome indicator measures the change that follows, such as partners meeting a standard or policies adopted. A good set has both.
Can I change the indicators?
Yes. Download your list as Excel and adapt the wording, the definition or the data source to your program. The indicators are free to use.
How many indicators should a program have?
As few as you can use well: often between six and twelve for a whole program. Every indicator costs time to collect, so keep only those that will inform a decision.
Where do these indicators come from?
We wrote them from common practice in capacity strengthening, localization, advocacy and safeguarding programs. They are generic on purpose: check them against your donor's requirements.
